We all know that Ryan Newman’s Contract is up this year with Penske Racing. It is unclear if Newman will stay with Penske, but he has said that he is looking around, but that he is happy where he is.

Newman says it “potentially (opens up) more doors.”

“I wouldn’t say that my phone hasn’t rang off the hook,” Newman said. “I’m in a different situation. I’m not dissatisfied where I’m at. I just haven’t signed up. We’ll create correct process and get the final answer when the time comes.”

There are some other team options for Newman to head to.

Alltel, Ryan Newman’s primary sponsor was also bought out by private equity groups last year. While the private equity groups appear to want to keep Alltel in tact then resell it, do they want to stay in NASCAR? I have not heard anything on that front.

So, if Newman does go somewhere else, will (or can) Alltel follow or even stay in NASCAR at all? Personally I hope they do regardless if they stay with Ryan Newman. AT&T has already been booted out of the Cup series and I don’t want to see Sprint (or is it Nextel) be left as the only wireless company in the Cup. That would mean that they achieved what they wanted. After making sure AT&T had to leave, Sprint has really been under my skin. Making a good sponsor with good money leave the sport really upset me.

Martin Truex JR heading to Penske?
In other Penske Silly Season news, it is being reported the Martin Trues JR may head over to Penske for the creation of a 4th team. The rumor mill also has UPS coming over with Truex JR.

So, what about Bass Pro Shops who currently sponsors Martin Truex JR? Well Jayski.com is reporting that it is looking like Tony Stewart will be leaving Joe Gibbs and forming his won team. They are also reporting that it it appears Bass Pro Shops will go with Tony.

Now, is Penske really going to have 4 teams? Or is Ryan Newman planning on leaving Penske and bringing in Martin Truex JR would keep Penske at 3 Cup teams?

I can’t say. I can speculate. I think Ryan wants to stay with Penske, but I don’t think that he is happy with the cars performances. I have heard him on Trackpass numerous times complain about the engines or the car as a whole. While he may want to stay with Penske, he may be shopping for something else with a better package.

Sprint Being Sold?
How about this, what will the cup series be named next year. Word has it that T-Mobil may be making a bid of Sprint in coming weeks or months. Actually it is Deutsche Telekom that owns T-Mobil, so it would be Deutsche Telekom buying Sprint.

T-Mobile is currently the 4th largest customer based wireless carrier. If T-Mobile (Deutsche Telekom) were to purchase Sprint/Nextel, they would triple their customer base and become the largest wireless carrier in the U.S.

So, will it be the Deutsche Telekom Cup Series next year (or the year after). I really hope not.

Ryan Newman will be starting 10th for the Crown Royal Presents the Dan Lowry 400 at Richmond International Raceway.

Newman posted a speed of 125.348 / 21.540 trailing behind the pole setter Denny Hamlin by -0.145.

Today, in the only practice the cup series has for this race, Newman also posted a 10th fastest time of 121.946 / 22.141 and -0.263 behind the leader. Dale Earnhardt JR turned out the fastest lap of that practice.

Mike over at Trouble In Turn 2 points out today that you really shouldn’t be to concerned with practice times. I have to agree, although I have to admit that I am always curious to see how Newman and the other drivers did in practice.

In the videos that I have posted it amazes me that Newman is being asked about what it’s like in a loosing drought. I don’t think it was asked specifically of him, but still, he just won 9 races ago. And it was the Daytona 500. So why is he even fielding questions about being in a drought. Amazes me.
